A Model Speech of Self-Introduction
Apply what you’ve learned in this chapter by analyzing the following case study, using the accompanying questions as a guide.
Hi. My name is Adam Currier, and I’m going to be introducing myself to you today. When I was first told that I had to introduce myself using a collage, I was afraid because I think college, and I immediately think art, which is a subject that I have never been any good at.
So I was stuck on what I wanted to do for my college to introduce myself. So when I’m stuck and when I need any kind of inspiration, I usually turn to my wall. And that’s where I went—I turned to my wall. And when I look at my bedroom wall, I see quotes like "Be mindful of yourself and the world around you" and "Time is not a thing you have lost; it is not a thing you ever had." And I wondered why I had some of those quotes on my wall and other quotes like "We’re not here to find a way to heaven. The way is heaven." And I started thinking about why I had these themes on my wall. And I realized that it was because of two major events that have happened in my life.
The first one was the theme that really got me thinking about pursuing the goals I wanted to pursue, even when other people told me that it wasn’t possible. And that was my sophomore year of high school. I had decided that I wanted to take eight classes instead of the normal six. So instead of being at school from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., I’d be there from 7 in the morning to 7 at night.
And the minute people heard that I was going to do this, everyone said it couldn’t be done. My mom, my dad, the people who have been most supportive of me in my life, told me that I couldn’t do it. And that I would wreck my grade point average, and I would end up not being able to get into a college that I wanted to go to. My friends, who have also supported me right by my parents, told me that I couldn’t do it.
And I did it anyway. And I made it through without wrecking my GPA. I finished up with A’s and B’s just like I had all the years that I’d been in school. Realizing that even when no one was supporting me, I set my mind to a goal and achieved that goal; I realize that it’s important to never let people tell you what you are capable of. If someone says you can’t do that and it’s something you really want to do, do it anyways.
The second theme on my wall was to enjoy every minute of life. And I was thinking about the main thing that made me think about that, and I realized that it was my grandfather. Every year since I ever remember, we’ve gone back to Iowa and spent a week of that summer just being with my dad’s parents, my grandparents. And each year as I grew, I grew closer and closer to my grandfather. And it got to the point where I no longer just knew him as a relative, but I knew him as a human being.
Sitting outside on his porch one day, right before he died, he told me about his life and we were talking about what he had done—being in World War II, being a dentist, being a community leader—all the things that he had ever achieved in his life, and it all sounded so perfect. I said, "Grandfather, what do you regret most in your life?" And he said, "Adam, I regret not seeing more sunsets." A couple months later he passed on, and I realized that I didn’t enjoy every single minute with him as much as I could have and I didn’t have the time with him that I thought that I’d have.
So I look at my wall now and I see the quotes on it and I see the stories on it and the pictures on it, and I realize that everyone I’ve ever come into contact with, everyone I’ve ever met, everything I’ve ever done has all contributed to shaping the person I am, and my wall reflects the person that I am. So if I can pass on anything to you, I would hope that it would be to enjoy every minute of your life, and in that enjoyment never let people tell you what is possible because only you know your potential. Thank you.
Questions:
1. In his short speech, does Adam convey who he is?
2. Based on Adam's speech, what characteristics do you think describe him?
3. Does the closing of the speech reflect back to the opening?

Answers

Answer 1

Adam shares personal experiences and values self-discovery and learning from the people and experiences in his life. He also ties everything together in the closing by saying that all the people and experiences in his life have shaped who he is and that his wall reflects the person he is.

What are some characteristics that describe Adam Currier based on his model speech of self-introduction, and how does the closing of the speech reflect back to the opening?

In his model speech of self-introduction, Adam Currier does convey who he is. He shares personal experiences, talks about his determination in taking eight classes in high school, the influence of his grandfather, and the themes and quotes on his wall that reflect his values and beliefs.
Based on Adam's speech, some characteristics that describe him include determination, resilience, open-mindedness, and appreciation for life. He values self-discovery and learning from the people and experiences in his life.
The closing of the speech does reflect back to the opening. Adam begins by talking about the challenge of creating a collage to introduce himself, which leads him to share stories about his life and the important lessons he has learned. In the end, he ties everything together by saying that all the people and experiences in his life have shaped who he is and that his wall (which inspired the collage) reflects the person he is.

Do you think that Linda will be happy to return to the World State? How do you think she will be received? Why? What about John, who has never lived in the World State? Will he know how to behave? Will he be accepted? Will he be happy? Write a paragraph below about how you think Linda and John will do in the World State.
Help this is for the Brave New World Book

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

It is difficult to predict whether Linda will be happy to return to the World State. On the one hand, she has suffered greatly during her time on the reservation, and the World State represents a return to comfort and stability. On the other hand, Linda has been conditioned to reject many of the values and beliefs of the World State, and her experiences on the reservation may have caused her to question the society in which she was raised. If Linda does return to the World State, she may struggle to adjust to its rigid social structure and lack of individuality.

As for John, he has never lived in the World State and has been raised with vastly different values. It is unlikely that he will know how to behave according to the norms of the World State, and his rejection of many of its fundamental beliefs and practices may make it difficult for him to be accepted by society. Additionally, John's experiences on the reservation may have left him with a deep distrust of the World State, making it difficult for him to be happy in such a society. Ultimately, both Linda and John may struggle to adjust to life in the World State, as they have been shaped by their experiences in vastly different worlds.

Tom is obviously a terrible person ( racist, cheats on his wife, violet towards women)- why doesn’t anyone try to stop him in this behavior? Gatsby

Answers

Tom not only has a visible affair with a woman in town, but he is abusive to both his wife and his mistress. Always needing to feel in control, Tom is often judgmental in conversation, especially toward Nick and Gatsby, two men that seem to know his wife apart from him. No one tries to stop him because he is his own person/character.

It is important to understand that fictional characters, such as Tom and Gatsby, are creations of the author's imagination and serve a particular purpose in the story. The characters in a novel are not real people, and their actions and behaviors do not necessarily reflect the views or actions of the author or society as a whole.

In the case of Tom, it is possible that other characters in the novel are either complicit or indifferent to his behavior due to the social norms and values of the time period. For example, in the 1920s, when "The Great Gatsby" is set, racism and sexism were prevalent, and it was not uncommon for men to have affairs or engage in violent behavior towards women without facing significant consequences.

It is also possible that some characters may not be aware of the extent of Tom's behavior, or they may feel powerless to do anything about it. Additionally, the author may have deliberately portrayed Tom in a negative light to highlight the flaws and moral decay of the society in which the novel is set.

Ultimately, it is up to the reader to interpret and make sense of the characters and their actions in the context of the story and the world in which it is set.

Write four to five sentences supporting the inference that the British waited until they were sure the telegram would encourage the us to enter the war.identify at least two pieces of evidence from the passage and explain how that evidence leads to the inference

Answers

Answer:

The passage in question is not provided, so I cannot reference specific evidence from it. However, based on historical context, it is possible to infer that the British waited until they were sure the telegram would encourage the US to enter the war.

One piece of evidence that supports this inference is the fact that the British intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram and held onto it for several weeks before sharing it with the United States. This delay suggests that they were strategic in their timing and wanted to ensure that the US would be more likely to enter the war if they were presented with the information at the right moment.

Another piece of evidence is the fact that the British had been trying to persuade the US to enter the war for some time. They had been sending messages and information to the US government in an effort to build support for their cause. It is reasonable to assume that they would have waited until they had a message that was particularly persuasive before sharing it with the US government.

Overall, these pieces of evidence suggest that the British were deliberate and strategic in their decision to share the Zimmerman Telegram with the US. They likely waited until they were confident that the message would have the desired effect before sharing it, which ultimately led to the US entering the war on the side of the Allies.

The Tell-Tale Heart:

A feeling of uneasiness and foreboding is produced by the narrator's fixation on the elderly man's eye as well as the steady intensification of tension as she plans the murder. A joyful ending, a logical incident, or a considerable amount of emotional turmoil are not necessary characteristics of gothic fiction, yet these components are absent from the passage.

The narrator's obsession with the old man's eye and choice to kill him both contribute to the unsettling mood that is a staple of gothic literature.

This is done when the tolerance applies to the entire assembly or a group of components, such as an assembly of parts all having the same tolerance. (round your answer to 2 decimal places.) Soooo Sorry its longThe Persistent GardenerIt was Jilly's last day in the green house. Summer was coming to an end and so was the growing season. School would be starting next week and the fall plants were well enough along to allow Mrs. T. to manage the greenhouses herself. As Jilly worked the plants for the last time, she tried to focus on the new school year instead of the details of the greenhouse. It had been a hard, hot summer, but Jilly was not ready for it to be over.Jilly moved down the tables, tucking a stray hair behind her ear with a gloved and already dirty hand. She'd repotted the last of the rosemary plants and mixed a new batch of potting soil already. Mrs. T. now had enough potting soil to last her through September. Jilly looked at a couple of maiden-hair ferns that were beginning to yellow in their small pots. She loved their lacey fronds and had grown concerned over the last few days that they needed repotting or a boost of fertilizer. She had also worried that she would continue to find chores that needed doing, plants that needed help, right up until the minute she left today. She hated unfinished things. She hated details not being tended to.The sun had been above the trees and blasting the greenhouse for a good hour now. Jilly listened for the familiar whirr of the automatic vents opening. When the greenhouse reached a certain temperature, the vents would open automatically. The vents would have a cooling effect for an hour or so, and then no amount of breeze would put a dent in the heat. Mrs. T. often claimed Jilly must be part reptile as she was able to work longer in the greenhouse than anyone else. The heat just didn't bother her. In fact, Jilly often looked forward to the warmth of the greenhouse and feeling the heat seep into her bones. It felt good to her, but she understood others who found it hard to breathe in 100 degree temperatures.Jilly heard the greenhouse door bang, and looked up from her ferns to see Mrs. T. walking down the aisle with a tray of young plants. Mums, Jilly supposed, the flowers everyone wants for fall. She had helped Mrs. T. take cuttings and plant the small stems in new pots. They were doing nicely from the look of things."We will keep these in here for now," said Mrs. T. "They are getting too much rain outside."It had been a rainy couple of days. Jilly knew, as well as anyone, that overwatering could kill potted plants quickly."Do you remember when I overwatered those mint plants?" Jilly asked Mrs. T."I used to think no one could kill a mint plant," Mrs. T. said, laughing."Well I am full of surprises, apparently," Jilly replied. Jilly remembered the sad green plants that just kept looking more and more wilted no matter how much water she gave them. It was a beginner's mistake, and Jilly had been so embarrassed for making it."That you are," replied Mrs. T. "But I know you learned a lesson you won't ever forget.""Of course. Herbs like their roots damp, not flooded," Jilly answered."Well that is not the lesson I was thinking of," Mrs. T. said.Jilly wondered for a minute what the lesson could be. She straightened the rows of geraniums in front of her, picking up one or two to check for aphids under the leaves. It had been a summer full of lessons, some especially hard for a girl who thought she knew a lot about plants. She breathed deeply the warm, humid air. She hated the cooped up feeling of air conditioned air, the feeling of being cut off from the sun. She knew school and the library would offer only these uncomfortable feelings and little time to spend in the sun or with plants. She had come to understand this over the summer-her need to be around growing things was huge."I'm not sure, Mrs. T." she said, "I've learned so much this summer. I couldn't possibly say what you are thinking.""You did learn many lessons, Jilly. You knew so much when you started. You've gone farther than any other assistants I've had. I will miss you.""And I will miss you," Jilly replied. "Thank you for the opportunity and the job." Jilly watched Mrs. T. put the tray of mums down on the center row of tables. Wearing her familiar brown apron, Mrs. T. looked just as she had on Jilly's first day."My pleasure, of course, dear," Mrs. T. replied. "My hope for you, as for all my assistants over the years, is that you will learn as much about yourself as you do about growing plants."Recalling her thoughts all morning, about what she enjoyed about her summer job, Jilly realized she knew much more than just how to not drown the mint.Which of the following describes the conflict in the story?
