Read the following text reproduced from neil postman's amusing ourselves to death (new york: penguin, 1985. 127-128): the television commercial is the most peculiar and pervasive form of communication to issue forth from the electric plug. the move away from the use of propositions in commercial advertising began at the end of the nineteenth century. but it was not until the 1950's that the television commercial made linguistic discourse obsolete as the basis for product decisions. by substituting images for claims, the pictorial commercial made emotional appeal, not tests of truth, the basis for consumer decisions. which of the following is not a plagiarized version of the above?
a. television commercials have made language obselete as a basis for making decisions about products. the pictorial commercial has substituted images for claims and thereby made emotional appeal, rather than tests of truth, the basis for consumer decisions.
b. postman argues that television commercials do not use language or "tests of truth" to viewers decide whether to buy a product. instead, they rely on images to create an emotional appeal that influences consumers' decisions (postman, 1985: 127-128). correct
c. the television commercial is a terrible thing. the move away from the use of propositions in commercial advertising began at the end of the nineteenth century. but it was not until the 1950's that the television commercial made linguistic discourse obsolete as the basis for product decisions. by substituting images for claims, the pictorial commercial made emotional appeal, not tests of truth, the basis for consumer decisions. (neil postman, 1985).
d. all of the above passages are plagiarized.

Answers

Answer 1

The correct answer is B. Postman argues that television commercials do not use language or "tests of truth" to viewers decide whether to buy a product. instead, they rely on images to create an emotional appeal that influences consumers' decisions (postman, 1985: 127-128).

Explanation:

To avoid plagiarism you need to reference the author, this means mentioning the name of the author and including the last name, date of publication, and pages in a parenthesis at the end of the citation. Also, if the exact words of the author are included rather than only a summary or paraphrase of these it is necessary to enclose the exact words in quotation mark (").

According to this, the option that is not a plagiarized version is B, because this reference the author correctly in (postman, 1985: 127-128) and uses the quotation marks when the exact words of the author are used. Also, in other options, the author is not referenced and the exact words of Postman are used without the quotation marks.

I JUST BOUGHT THE XIAOMI NOTE 8

Hello guys, i have been watching unboxing videos and researching about the Xiaomi note 8 on the net and i finally decided to take the plunge and buy the phone.

I've used the phone for two days now and so far i have not discovered any issues at all with the phone and the phone is simply amazing! It has a very flat surface and it does not feel quite as heavy as i thought. The fingerprint sensor is rear mounted, audio is clear, the 48mp camera is the bomb, clear and crisp pictures. I also really like its big 4,000mAh battery as one charge gives me a full day of use.

I was considering the Realme Q also but i ended up buying the Xiaomi note 8 because it was cheaper. The two devices are similar because they both use 4gb of RAM and 64gb of ROM for storage. The Realme Q has a slightly larger battery- 4035mAh compared to the 4000mAh of the note 8, it also has a better quality.

I got the note 8 for $180 while the realme q goes for $220.

Do you guys think the note 8 is worth it because of its price range? What do you think?

Recently I brought a new mobile phone, which is named iPhone 13, the specs of the phone are awesome and the phone has good battery life, it has got a good OLED display and looks very premium.

The phone is light in weight and is easy to hold. It has an average size of 6.4 inches. I have got this phone worth $900. This phone features tones of modes and is good for professionals. Apple has really made new improvements and updates to the phone UI and lots of improvements can be seen.

3. Tell: "I had fun at summer camp."

4. Tell: "Tim was nervous about the history test."

Show:

Answers

Answer:

To be able to show instead of tell, you have to create images in the reader's mind.

Explanation:

1. "Thousands of tiny bits of snow rained down silently all night."

See, you have to say what the snow was like. You have to use at least some of the 5 senses: sight, hear, smell, taste, feel. This is how you show.

2. "We got up at the crack of dawn and piled into the car. We had already packed our bags yesterday. The cool air breezed us as we stepped out and ran on the dry sand. We swam through the ice cold water and ate crunchy sandwiches."

This is how you show. You put enough detail so that the reader knows exactly what's going on and makes the reader feel like they are in the story.

3. "All week at summer camp, my throat was sore from roaring with laughter all the time. I loved zipping through the air on ziplines with my friends, splashing them in the water in the pool, and playing hard-core basketball on the hot court."

You have to go into specifics to show. It's like looking through your own memories. You probably remember a lot from your life, all the tiny details. You have to make fake memories for story telling.

4. "Tim repeatedly chewed on his fingernails, glancing around nervously. He did not know how the test was going to be. Even though he had practiced all night for the past week, he was sure he had missed some key dates and people in history. He wondered when exactly did Abraham Lincoln die when the teacher started handing out test packets."

You take some memories from your own life and translate it to a story. What did you feel like when you where nervous for a test? What did you think when you where nervous for a test? Did you chew your fingernails? Did you think you were going to fail? This is how you show.

D). The older adults might be convinced to participate in experiments involving a fountain of youth.

Explanation:

The inference that the author recommends through various sections of this passage is that 'the older adults might be convinced to participate in experiments involving a fountain of youth' as it helps them in developing as well as enhancing their skills like learning, decision-making, coping skills, becoming more independent, etc.. These skills would eventually assist them in preventing the potential risks of homelessness, unemployment due to low attainment of education. Is there a figure of speech found in "Lofty mountains that pierce the clouds and reach to dizzying heights may appear to

us humans as coldly majestic, lonely, even forbidding. Yet to a great variety of

wildlife they constitute home. Some of these creatures would never think of

descending to lower altitudes. And to see them in a zoo, even if they could long

survive such a humiliating experience, one could gain no realistic idea of their way

of life among peaks and chasm"?

Answers

Answer:

Yes.  Personification is the literary device used here.  This can be seen in the following expressions:

1. "Lofty mountains that pierce the clouds and reach to ..."

2. "Some of these creatures would never think of ..."

3. "... they (animals) survive such a humiliating experience ..."

The first gives the "lofty mountains" a human attribute with arrows and hands to pierce and reach to dizzying heights.   The second gives animals thinking faculty as humans.  The third makes it look as if animals could experience humiliation like humans.

In these three instances, one can say that objects and animals were given human attributes to act, think, and behave like human beings.

Explanation:

Personification is the assignment of human qualities, motivation, or behavior to inanimate objects, animals, or natural phenomena (in short to things that are not human).  Example, "The news vied for my undivided attention with the novel I was reading.  I put down the novel and was carried away by the news."
