Which of the following is truc? A) Forward contracts are marked to market; futures contracts are settled once at maturity. B) Forward contracts are standardized; futures contracts can have any conditions C) Forward contracts are usually closed out before maturity; futures contracts usually lead to delivery. D) Futures contracts usually have a range of delivery dates; forward contracts usually have one delivery date. E) Futures contracts are usually long term; forward contracts are short term.

Answers

The correct answer is option C) Forward contracts are usually closed out before maturity; futures contracts usually lead to delivery.

Explanation:
1. Forward contracts are marked to market, which means that the value of the contract is adjusted based on the current market price. Futures contracts, on the other hand, are settled once at maturity, meaning that the buyer and seller exchange the underlying asset and payment at the end of the contract period.
2. Forward contracts are not standardized and can be customized to include specific conditions, such as the delivery date and quantity of the underlying asset. In contrast, futures contracts are standardized and traded on exchanges with predetermined terms and conditions.
3. Forward contracts are often closed out or settled before their maturity date through an offsetting transaction in the opposite direction. This allows parties to terminate their contractual obligations early. In contrast, futures contracts usually lead to physical delivery of the underlying asset, although they can also be settled in cash.
4. Futures contracts typically have a range of delivery dates, allowing buyers and sellers to choose the most convenient date for the transaction. In contrast, forward contracts usually have one specific delivery date agreed upon by the parties involved.
5. There is no general rule stating that futures contracts are usually long term and forward contracts are short term. The duration of both types of contracts can vary depending on the underlying asset and market conditions.
Therefore, the statement that correctly describes the difference between forward contracts and futures contracts is that forward contracts are usually closed out before maturity, while futures contracts usually lead to delivery.

Preparing the [I] consolidation journal entries for sale of depreciable assets - Equity method

Assume that on January 1, 2014, a wholly owned subsidiary sells to its parent, for a sale price of $115,000, equipment that originally cost $150,000. The subsidiary originally purchased the equipment on January 1, 2010, and depreciated the equipment assuming a 12-year useful life (straight-line with no salvage value). The parent has adopted the subsidiary’s depreciation policy and depreciates the equipment over the remaining useful life of 8 years. The parent uses the equity method to account for its Equity Investment.

a. Compute the annual pre-consolidation depreciation expense for the subsidiary (pre-intercompany sale) and the parent (post-intercompany sale).

b. Compute the pre-consolidation Gain on Sale recognized by the subsidiary during 2014.

c. Prepare the required [I] consolidation journal entry in 2014 (assume a full year of depreciation). d. Now assume that you are preparing the year-end consolidation journal entries for the year ending December 31, 2016. Prepare the required [I] consolidation journal entries during the holding period.

Answers

a. To compute the annual pre-consolidation depreciation expense for the subsidiary (pre-intercompany sale),

we need to divide the original cost of the equipment ($150,000) by the useful life (12 years). Therefore, the annual depreciation expense for the subsidiary is $12,500.

For the parent (post-intercompany sale), we divide the remaining book value of the equipment after the intercompany sale ($150,000 - $12,500 * 4 years = $100,000) by the remaining useful life (8 years). Thus, the annual depreciation expense for the parent is $12,500.

b. The pre-consolidation gain on sale recognized by the subsidiary during 2014 can be calculated by subtracting the book value of the equipment ($12,500 * 4 years = $50,000) from the sale price ($115,000). Hence, the pre-consolidation gain on sale is $65,000.

c. To prepare the required [I] consolidation journal entry in 2014, we need to record the depreciation expense for both the subsidiary and the parent.

For the subsidiary:
Debit: Depreciation Expense ($12,500)
Credit: Accumulated Depreciation ($12,500)

For the parent:
Debit: Investment in Subsidiary ($12,500)
Credit: Equity in Earnings of Subsidiary ($12,500)

d. To prepare the year-end consolidation journal entries for the year ending December 31, 2016, we need to record the depreciation expense for both the subsidiary and the parent, as well as any adjustments for the equity method.

The journal entries will be similar to the ones in part c, but the depreciation expense will be calculated based on the remaining useful life and book value as of December 31, 2016. Adjustments for equity method will depend on any changes in the subsidiary's net income and dividends declared during the holding period.

Remember to check for any changes in the subsidiary's net income and dividends declared during the holding period to make appropriate adjustments in the consolidation journal entries.

Bond Y is a US corporate bond making semiannual payments. This bond has a coupon rate of 7.8 percent, a YTM of 9.8 percent, and also has 15 years to maturity. Assume the interest rate remains unchanged and the bond has a par value of $1,000. What is the current price of the bond and the price in 5 years?

Answers

The current price of Bond Y is $871.56, and the price of the bond in 5 years is expected to be $892.71.

To calculate the current price of Bond Y, we can use the present value formula for the bond's cash flows. The bond has a coupon rate of 7.8 percent, which is the annual coupon payment as a percentage of the par value. Since the bond makes semiannual payments, the coupon payment per period is $1,000 * 7.8% / 2 = $39.

The bond has a YTM (Yield to Maturity) of 9.8 percent, which represents the expected rate of return on the bond. With a 15-year maturity and semiannual payments, there will be 30 periods (15 years * 2).

To calculate the present value of the bond's cash flows, we discount each semiannual coupon payment and the final par value at the YTM. The present value of the coupon payments can be calculated using the present value of an ordinary annuity formula:

Coupon PV = (Coupon Payment / (1 + YTM/2)) + (Coupon Payment / (1 + YTM/2)^2) + ... + (Coupon Payment / (1 + YTM/2)^30)

Using the formula, we find:

Coupon PV = ($39 / (1 + 9.8%/2)) + ($39 / (1 + 9.8%/2)^2) + ... + ($39 / (1 + 9.8%/2)^30)

After calculating the present value of the coupon payments, we discount the final par value of $1,000 at the YTM:

Par Value PV = $1,000 / (1 + 9.8%/2)^30

The current price of the bond is the sum of the present value of the coupon payments and the present value of the par value:

Current Price = Coupon PV + Par Value PV

By calculating these values, we find that the current price of Bond Y is $871.56.

To determine the price of the bond in 5 years, we need to recalculate the present value of the cash flows using the new time period of 25 (15 years - 5 years remaining) and the same YTM. By following the same calculations, we find that the price of the bond in 5 years is expected to be $892.71.

To test for any significant difference in the number of hours between breakdowns for four machines, the following data were obtained.

Answers

To test for any significant difference in the number of hours between breakdowns for four machines, a statistical analysis can be conducted using appropriate technology. One common approach is to perform an analysis of variance (ANOVA), which determines whether there are significant differences in the means of multiple groups.

The data obtained would typically consist of the number of hours between breakdowns for each machine. Using statistical software or programming languages such as R, Python, or SPSS, the ANOVA test can be conducted. The null hypothesis assumes that there is no significant difference in the means of the four groups, while the alternative hypothesis suggests that at least one group mean is significantly different.

The ANOVA analysis provides an F-statistic and a corresponding p-value. If the p-value is below a predetermined significance level (e.g., 0.05), it indicates that there is sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there are significant differences in the number of hours between breakdowns for the four machines.

Answers

Jane is considering an investment in Fauna Flowers (FF). FF is trading at $33 a share. It the company's current dividend is $1.50 a share, FF's dividend yield is 4.55%.

To calculate FF's dividend yield, divide the annual dividend per share ($1.50) by the current share price ($33) and multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. Dividend yield is a financial ratio that indicates the annual return on investment (expressed as a percentage) that an investor receives in the form of dividends from owning a particular stock. It is calculated by dividing the annual dividend payment per share by the stock's current market price per share and multiplying the result by 100.

The formula for dividend yield is as follows:

Dividend Yield = (Annual Dividend per Share / Market Price per Share) * 100

For example, if a stock pays an annual dividend of $2 per share and its current market price is $40 per share, the dividend yield would be:

Dividend Yield = ($2 / $40) * 100 = 5%

This means that for every $1 invested in the stock, the investor would receive a 5% return in the form of dividends.
Dividend yield = (Annual dividend per share / Share price) * 100
Using the given values:
Dividend yield = ($1.50 / $33) * 100

Answers

Robbins Products' assets include cash, receivables, inventory, and equipment, while its liabilities consist of accounts payable and long-term notes payable.

What are the assets and liabilities of Robbins Products as of December 31, 2021?

Robbins Products' balance sheet as of December 31, 2021 is as follows:

**Assets**

Cash: $19,000

Receivables: $19,000

Inventory: $75,000

Equipment: $188,000

**Liabilities and Stockholders' Equity**

Accounts Payable: $20,000

Long-Term Notes Payable: $166,000

Common Stock: $33,500

Retained Earnings: To be calculated

To compute the retained earnings, we can use the accounting equation: Assets = Liabilities + Stockholders' Equity. Rearranging the equation, we have Stockholders' Equity = Assets - Liabilities.

In this case, the total assets amount to $301,000 ($19,000 + $19,000 + $75,000 + $188,000). The total liabilities amount to $186,000 ($20,000 + $166,000). Therefore, we can calculate the stockholders' equity as $115,000 ($301,000 - $186,000).

To determine the retained earnings, we need to know the beginning retained earnings balance and any net income or dividends for the period. Unfortunately, this information is not provided in the question. Hence, we cannot calculate the exact retained earnings without additional data.

The fair value of the bond purchased by Daphne’s was $73,500 on December 31, 2019.

What was the net dollar impact of any and all bond related entries on 2019 income before income taxes?

Answers

The net dollar impact of the bond-related entries on Daphne's Delights Inc.'s 2019 income before income taxes was a decrease of $1,500. This decrease is determined by calculating the difference between the bond's fair value and its face value.

Since the bond was properly reported as a trading security, any changes in fair value are recognized in the income statement. Therefore, the decrease in fair value of $1,500 would result in a reduction in income before income taxes for the year 2019.

It's worth noting that the interest income received from the bond throughout the year would also be included in the income statement, but it's not clear from the given information whether any interest income was received in 2019.

If Scot and Vidia eam an additional $80,000 of taxable income, what is their marginal tax rate òn this income? b. What is their marginal tax rate if, instead, they report an additional $80,000 in deductions? Note: For all requirements, round your answers to 2 decimal places. Individuals

Answers

Campbell's marginal tax rate on an additional $15,000 of taxable income or an additional $15,000 of deductions would both be 35%, while Scot and Vidia's marginal tax rate on an additional $80,000 of taxable income would be 24%, and their marginal tax rate on an additional $80,000 of deductions would be 22%.

For Campbell, a single taxpayer, the marginal tax rate is calculated as follows:

a. Additional taxable income of $15,000:

Campbell's total taxable income, including the additional $15,000, is $415,000. Based on the tax brackets for single taxpayers, since $415,000 falls between $209,426 and $523,600, Campbell's marginal tax rate on the additional $15,000 would be 35%.

b. Additional deductions of $15,000:

If Campbell had $15,000 of additional deductions, her taxable income would decrease to $385,000. Based on the same tax brackets, since $385,000 also falls between $209,426 and $523,600, her marginal tax rate on the reduced taxable income would remain at 35%.

For Scot and Vidia, married taxpayers filing jointly:

a. Additional taxable income of $80,000:

Assuming the tax brackets for married filing jointly are the same as those for 2021, Scot and Vidia's total taxable income, including the additional $80,000, would be $320,000. Since $320,000 falls between $172,751 and $329,850, their marginal tax rate on the additional $80,000 would be 24%.

b. Additional deductions of $80,000:

If Scot and Vidia had $80,000 of additional deductions, their taxable income would decrease to $160,000. Since $160,000 falls between $81,051 and $172,750, their marginal tax rate on the reduced taxable income would be 22%.

Therefore, Campbell's marginal tax rate on an additional $15,000 of taxable income or deductions is 35%. For Scot and Vidia, their marginal tax rate on an additional $80,000 of taxable income is 24%, while their marginal tax rate on an additional $80,000 of deductions is 22%.

Green et al. (2005) estimate the supply and demand curves for California processed tomatoes. The supply function is: ln(Q5)=0.2+0.55ln(p), where Q is the quantity of processing tomatoes in millions of tons per year and p is the price in dollars per ton. The demand function is: ln(Qd)=2.6−0.2ln(p)+0.15ln(pt). where pt is the price of tomato paste (which is what processing tomatoes are used to produce) in dollars per ton. Suppose pt=126. What is the demand function for processing tomatoes, where the quantity is solely a function of the price of processing tomatoes? (Enter all numeric responses using real numbers rounded to three decimal places.) The demand function for processing tomatoes is ln(Q)=−ln(p).

Answers

The demand function for processing tomatoes, where the quantity is solely a function of the price of processing tomatoes, is ln(Q) = -0.2ln(p).

To find the demand function for processing tomatoes where the quantity is solely a function of the price of processing tomatoes, we start with the given demand function:

ln(Qd) = 2.6 - 0.2ln(p) + 0.15ln(pt)

where Qd is the quantity demanded of processing tomatoes, p is the price of processing tomatoes, and pt is the price of tomato paste.

Given that pt = 126, we substitute this value into the demand function:

ln(Qd) = 2.6 - 0.2ln(p) + 0.15ln(126)

Now, we simplify the equation by using logarithmic properties. Using the property ln(a*b) = ln(a) + ln(b), we have:

ln(Qd) = 2.6 - 0.2ln(p) + ln(126^0.15)

Simplifying further:

ln(Qd) = 2.6 - 0.2ln(p) + ln(4.0706)

Next, we want to express the demand function solely as a function of the price of processing tomatoes (ln(Q) = -ln(p)). To do this, we equate the right-hand side of the demand function to -ln(p):

2.6 - 0.2ln(p) + ln(4.0706) = -ln(p)

To isolate ln(p) on one side of the equation, we rearrange the terms:

0.2ln(p) + ln(p) = 2.6 - ln(4.0706)

Combining the ln(p) terms:

0.2ln(p) + ln(p) = ln(p)(0.2 + 1) = 1.2ln(p)

Now, we have:

1.2ln(p) = 2.6 - ln(4.0706)

To solve for ln(p), we divide both sides by 1.2:

ln(p) = (2.6 - ln(4.0706)) / 1.2

Using a calculator, we can evaluate the right-hand side of the equation:

ln(p) ≈ 0.028

Therefore, the demand function for processing tomatoes, where the quantity is solely a function of the price of processing tomatoes, is approximately:

ln(Q) = -ln(p) ≈ -0.028

"What are some of the ethical questions which COVID19 raised about capitalism and the way markets work? What is social and economic justice and do markets deliver it? Why/why not?"

Answers

The COVID-19 pandemic raised ethical questions about capitalism and markets, exposing their flaws in addressing crises and resulting in unequal resource distribution and exploitation. Markets often fall short in achieving social and economic justice due to profit-driven motives, perpetuating inequality and neglecting marginalized communities' needs.

COVID-19 pandemic has raised ethical questions regarding capitalism and the functioning of markets. Specifically, it has revealed the flaws in free-market capitalism that were often ignored or overlooked before the pandemic. The pandemic has shown the limitations of a market-driven economy when it comes to responding to crises that affect the entire population equally and simultaneously.

Ethical concerns that emerged during the pandemic include:

1. The unequal distribution of resources and access to healthcare, which left many vulnerable and marginalized populations with little protection.

2. The exploitation of workers, particularly essential workers who were required to continue working despite the risks to their health and safety.

3. The prioritization of profit over people's lives, as some companies and industries continued to operate despite the risks to their employees and customers.

4. The unequal burden of the pandemic on low-income communities and communities of color, who were disproportionately affected by the virus due to systemic inequalities.

Social and economic justice is the concept of ensuring that all members of society have equal access to resources, opportunities, and protection under the law. Markets do not always succeed in delivering social and economic justice because they are driven by profit motives rather than social responsibility.

The reasons behind their failure to achieve social and economic justice include:

1. The perpetuation of inequality through the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few.

2. The exploitation of workers and the environment in the pursuit of profit.

3. The lack of access to healthcare, education, and other basic necessities for marginalized communities.

In either form, the entity is expected to generate an 12 percent annual before-tax return on a $560,000 investment. Sandra’s marginal income tax rate is 37 percent, and her tax rate on dividends and capital gains is 23.8 percent (including the 3.8 percent net investment income tax). If Sandra organizes LAB as an LLC, she will be required to pay an additional 2.9 percent for self-employment tax and an additional 0.9 percent for the additional Medicare tax. LAB’s income is not qualified business income (QBI) so Sandra is not allowed to claim the QBI deduction. Assume that LAB will distribute all of its after-tax earnings every year as a dividend if it is formed as a C corporation.

Answers

Sandra should organize LAB as a C corporation to minimize her overall tax liability and maximize after-tax earnings.

By organizing LAB as a C corporation, Sandra can benefit from a lower tax rate on dividends and capital gains, which is 23.8 percent, compared to her marginal income tax rate of 37 percent as an LLC. Additionally, since LAB's income is not qualified business income (QBI), Sandra cannot claim the QBI deduction if it is organized as an LLC. By distributing all after-tax earnings as a dividend in a C corporation, Sandra can avoid double taxation on the corporate income, as dividends are only taxed at the individual level. On the other hand, if LAB is organized as an LLC, Sandra would have to pay self-employment tax (2.9 percent) and an additional Medicare tax (0.9 percent) in addition to her regular income tax. Therefore, organizing LAB as a C corporation would minimize Sandra's overall tax liability and maximize her after-tax earnings.
