Saving the Apollo 13 Mission
On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was launched for a planned moon landing. Two days into the mission, however, one of the oxygen tanks in the spacecraft exploded, causing a loss of air, electricity, and water. The moon landing had to be canceled, and the astronauts had to figure out how to get home. Their solution was to move into the lunar module, the small craft that was supposed to land on the moon, for much of the remaining trip. The lunar module contained fewer supplies, however. Therefore, the astronauts had to conserve as much food and water as possible. By firing the lunar module's engine, the men were able to get the spacecraft on the correct course to return to Earth. On April 17, Apollo 13 landed safely in the Pacific Ocean.

What is the main idea of the passage?

A. After an explosion on Apollo 13, the astronauts had to conserve supplies.

B. After an explosion on Apollo 13, the astronauts took shelter in the lunar module.

C. After an explosion on Apollo 13, the spaceship began to lose air, water, and power.

Which phrase best characterizes the somber mood of the excerpt? excerpt from The Opal of Carmalovitch by Max Pemberton Dark was falling from a dull and humid sky, and the lamps were beginning to struggle for brightness in Piccadilly, when the opal of Carmalovitch was first put into my hand. The day had been a sorry one for business: no light, no sun, no stay of the downpour of penetrating mist which had been swept through the city by the driving south wind from the late dawn to the mock of sunset. I had sat in my private office for six long hours, and had not seen a customer. The umbrella-bearing throng which trod the street before my window hurried quickly through the mud and the slush, as people who had no leisure even to gaze upon precious stones they could not buy. I was going home, in fact, as the one sensible proceeding on such an afternoon, and had my hand upon the great safe to shut it, when the mirror above my desk showed me the reflection of a curious-looking man who had entered the outer shop, and stood already at the counter. At the first glance I judged that this man was no ordinary customer. His dress was altogether singular. He had a black coat covering him from his neck to his heels. But his hands were ungloved, and he wore a low hat, which might have been the hat of an office boy. I could see from the little window of my private room, which gives my eye command of the shop, that he had come on foot, and for lack of any umbrella was pitiably wet. Yet there was fine bearing about him, and he was clearly a man given to command, for my assistant mounted to my room with his name at the first bidding.

(Note: There could be some definite improvements for all of these sentences. What I'm about to say may not be consistent with how other people learned.)

Explanation:  "But my assurance was ill-founded, for, in spite of all my coaxing, Nab only circled around and around me until I was dizzy trying to keep track of him."

For is conjunction; any conjunctions after an independent clause are fine.

"Nab suddenly made a dash so close that his flippers brushed my side. He snapped the fish out of my hand, and in the same instant he was again beyond reach."

There needs to be a comma after "instant" so that it would make an independent clause after it.

"By this time I had begun to feel pretty well exhausted, and when I suddenly thought of the undertow, I decided to swim back."

A comma should be placed after "time" to make an independent clause after.

He was a newcomer in the land, a chechaquo, and this was his first winter. The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances. Fifty degrees below zero meant eighty-odd degrees of frost. Such fact impressed him as being cold and uncomfortable, and that was all. It did not lead him to meditate upon his frailty as a creature of temperature, and upon man's frailty in general, able only to live within certain narrow limits of heat and cold; and from there on it did not lead him to the conjectural field of immortality and man's place in the universe. Fifty degrees below zero stood for a bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against by the use of mittens, ear-flaps, warm moccasins, and thick socks. Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero. That there should be anything more to it than that was a thought that never entered his head. As he turned to go on, he spat speculatively. There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him. He spat again. And again, in the air, before it could fall to the snow, the spittle crackled. He knew that at fifty below spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had crackled in the air.
