In paragraphs 26–28, the goldfish poses a Tough Question to Sergei. Does Sergei's refusal to answer show that he doesn't know the answer or that he doesn't want to answer? Explain, using text evidence.

Answers

The goldfish asks Sergei a Difficult Question, wondering if he loves his family or the money he earns to provide for them.

How can it be explained in detail?

Sergei does not react to the question, and the text does not specify if his silence is due to a lack of knowledge or a desire not to respond. But, there are certain hints in the text that imply Sergei's silence is due to a desire not to answer rather than a lack of knowledge.

To begin, when the goldfish asks Sergei a question, the text depicts Sergei as feeling "uncomfortable" and "anxious." This shows that the question has struck a nerve, and Sergei may be hesitant to respond since the real response might be revealing or embarrassing.

Ultimately, while the text does not directly specify whether Sergei's quiet is due to a lack of knowledge or a desire to remain silent, the linguistic evidence implies that the latter is more plausible. Sergei's discomfort and anxiety, his doubts about the veracity of the inquiry, and his avoidance of the goldfish's stare all show that he is avoiding answering the question because the real answer may be revealing or humiliating.

At break, as the only mixed kid out of a thousand, I faced the same predicament I had on the playground at H. A. Jack: Where was I supposed to go? Even with so many different groups to choose from, I wasn’t a natural constituent of any particular one. I obviously wasn’t Indian or Chinese. The colored kids would sh– on me all the time for being too black. So I wasn’t welcome there. As always, I was adept enough with white kids not to get bullied by them, but the white kids were always going shopping, going to the movies, going on trips—things that required money. We didn’t have any money, so I was out of the mix there, too. The group I felt the most affinity for was the poor black kids. I hung out with them and got along with them, but most of them took minibuses to school from way out in the townships, from Soweto, from Tembisa, from Alexandra. They rode to school as friends and went home as friends. They had their own groups. Weekends and school holidays, they were hanging out with one another and I couldn’t visit.

Two things were true about me at that age. One, I was still the fastest kid in school. And two, I had no pride. The second we were dismissed from assembly I would run like a bat out of hell to the tuck shop so I could be the first one there. I was always first in line. ...So people started approaching me during assembly. They’d say, “Hey, I’ve got ten rand. If you buy my food for me, I’ll give you two.” That’s when I learned: time is money. I realized people would pay me to buy their food because I was willing to run for it. I started telling everyone at assembly, “Place your orders. Give me a list of what you want, give me a percentage of what you’re going to spend, and I’ll buy your food for you.”

I was an overnight success. ...I’d make so much that I could buy my lunch using other kids’ money and keep the lunch money my mom gave me for pocket cash. Then I could afford to catch a bus home instead of walking or save up to buy whatever. Every day I’d take orders, assembly would end, and I’d make my mad dash and buy everybody’s hot dogs and Cokes and muffins. If you paid me extra you could even tell me where you’d be and I’d deliver it to you.

I’d found my niche. Since I belonged to no group I learned to move seamlessly between groups. I floated. I was a chameleon, still, a cultural chameleon. I learned how to blend. I could play sports with the jocks. I could talk computers with the nerds. I could jump in the circle and dance with the township kids. I popped around to everyone, working, chatting, telling jokes, making deliveries.

I was like a weed dealer, but of food. The weed guy is always welcome at the party. He’s not a part of the circle, but he’s invited into the circle temporarily because of what he can offer. That’s who I was. Always an outsider. As the outsider, you can retreat into a shell, be anonymous, be invisible. Or you can go the other way. You protect yourself by opening up. You don’t ask to be accepted for everything you are, just the one part of yourself that you’re willing to share. For me it was humor. I learned that even though I didn’t belong to one group, I could be a part of any group that was laughing. I’d drop in, pass out the snacks, tell a few jokes. I’d perform for them. I’d catch a bit of their conversation, learn more about their group, and then leave. I never overstayed my welcome. I wasn’t popular, but I wasn’t an outcast. I was everywhere with everybody, and at the same time I was all by myself.

At Sandringham High School, Trevor Noah initially struggled to fit in due to his mixed race background and lack of money. However, he found his niche as the "tuck-shop guy," taking food orders for other students and earning money in the process. While this role had its positives, it also had its negatives.

One positive result of being the "tuck-shop guy" was that Trevor was able to make money and afford things he previously could not. As he states in the book, "I'd make so much that I could buy my lunch using other kids' money and keep the lunch money my mom gave me for pocket cash. Then I could afford to catch a bus home instead of walking or save up to buy whatever" (Noah 129). This allowed Trevor to have more financial stability and freedom, which was a significant benefit.

However, one negative result of being the "tuck-shop guy" was that Trevor was still an outsider and did not truly belong to any one group. He explains, "I was like a weed dealer, but of food. The weed guy is always welcome at the party. He's not a part of the circle, but he's invited into the circle temporarily because of what he can offer. That's who I was. Always an outsider" (Noah 130). While Trevor was able to move between groups and be accepted temporarily, he was still not a true member of any of them and did not have a sense of belonging.

My favorite part of the book was Trevor's relationship with his mother. Throughout the book, it is clear that his mother is a strong and independent woman who instilled important values in Trevor. I especially enjoyed the chapter where Trevor talks about how his mother would take him on "adventures" to different parts of South Africa, exposing him to different cultures and ways of life. This not only gave Trevor a broader perspective, but it also showed the strong bond between him and his mother.

My least favorite part of the book was the chapter where Trevor discusses his abusive stepfather. It was difficult to read about the physical and emotional abuse that Trevor and his mother endured, and it was heartbreaking to see the impact it had on their lives. While it was an important part of Trevor's story, it was still a difficult and upsetting chapter to read.

Down and Dirty: Do Men and Women Perceive Cleanliness Differently?

Anyone who is fastidious about washing hands, avoiding grime, and keeping a neat immediate environment would probably want to keep a safe distance from my office, which is a chaos of slopped coffee, teetering piles of books and papers, dust, and assorted flotsam and jetsam.

I now have a defense for this studied disorder: namely, my chromosome count. In a study published in the online scientific journal PLoS ONE, researchers from San Diego State University and the University of Arizona examined 450 samples of bacteria taken from offices in New York City, San Francisco, and Tucson. These bacteria—and forgive the ickiness—came mostly from the skin, nose and mouth, and the digestive tract, and they were found mostly on chairs and telephones, with lower concentrations on computer keyboards and mice and on [physical] desktops.

The researchers' findings were various, but one of them was this: In the workspaces of men, the bacteria count was significantly higher than in those of women. The implications are immediately obvious: Men are, well, just not as tidy as women. Remarks an authority cited in the study, "Humans move through a sea of microbial life that is seldom perceived except in the context of potential disease and decay." If that is so, then men, it would appear, are enthusiastic body surfers while women barely dip their toes into the mess.

It is dangerous, always, to generalize on grounds of gender and sex. Yet there does appear to be significant variation between men and women in some categories of perception; reports a recent paper in the suggestively titled journal Biology of Sex Differences, women are superior to men in discriminating among fine distinctions of color, while males are better able to discern details in any given viewscape from a distance. This finding supports the so-called hunter-gatherer hypothesis, which proposes that certain biological adaptations occurred as a result of different divided-labor roles in human prehistory. Since men were better at spotting things from afar, they hunted, and since women were better at distinguishing colors, they chose which mushrooms to eat—they gathered, in other words, and apparently they developed the ability to discern dirt where men could not.

It seems to me, of course, that it is possible that those biological differences preceded the roles, that function followed form. But no matter: I'm busily scanning the horizon for gazelles, and therefore I can be forgiven for the chaos immediately before me.

Which line from the text presents an example of ethos?
